Hargeisa, Somaliland – The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Somaliland’s efforts in sustainable water resource management following a high-level meeting between its Country Representative, Etienne Peterschmitt, and the Minister of Water Resources Development, Abokor Good.
During the courtesy meeting, held in Hargeisa, the two sides discussed ways to strengthen collaboration to address Somaliland’s pressing water challenges, including scarcity, climate shocks, and the need for resilient infrastructure.
Peterschmitt underscored FAO’s ongoing role in supporting Somalia and Somaliland with expertise and resources to expand access to safe water for both communities and livestock. He noted that enhancing water governance and introducing climate-smart solutions are central to ensuring long-term resilience in the region.
Good welcomed FAO’s continued engagement, highlighting the importance of coordinated efforts in water conservation, dam construction, and improved distribution systems. He stressed that water security remains vital for agriculture, food production, and livelihoods in Somaliland, particularly in drought-prone areas.
Both parties agreed to explore new joint initiatives and reinforce existing projects that prioritize community-driven water management and sustainability.
The meeting comes at a time when Somaliland, like many parts of the Horn of Africa, faces recurring droughts and unpredictable rainfall patterns that strain water availability and threaten food security. FAO has been a key partner in supporting the ministry’s efforts to build resilience against these challenges.
