President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of Somalia has arrived in Asmara to begin a state tour of Eritrea.
Farmaajo’s plane landed in Asmara on Sunday after a brief stay at Juba, South Sudan.
He is expected to stay in Eritrea for two days. During that time, he would be signing bilateral trade deals with his Eritrean counterpart, President Isaias Afwerki.
President Afwerki accorded Farmaajo a rousing welcome at Asmara International Airport.
Diplomatic relations between the two Horn of Africa nations are often lukewarm. Eritrea and Somalia transition from enemies to allies and vice versa quite frequently.
Seven months ago, Farmaajo signed similar deals with Eritrea.
This represents the second time that Farmaajo has traveled outside Somalia since February 2020. Currently, he is preparing to defend his seat in the upcoming elections.
