President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo held a closed-door meeting with Mohamed Mursal, the Speaker of the House of Representatives (Lower House) on February 9.
During the Tuesday meeting, Farmaajo and Mursal discussed the ongoing elections crisis.
Apparently, Farmaajo’s discussions with Speaker Mursal are part of last-minute efforts to ensure that Somalia does not fall into a deep political crisis and instability.
The two leaders met a week after the National Consultative Conference on elections collapsed.
Last week, the conference between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) collapsed without a deal signed.
Farmaajo met Speaker Mursal in Mogadishu a day after his term as the President of the Republic of Somalia expired.
Furthermore, the term of the current parliament also expired in December 2020.
As things stand, Somalia is yet to hold parliamentary and presidential elections that were due in December 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
