President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of Somalia received the COVID-19 vaccine on March 16.
Farmaajo was among the first people in Somalia to receive a dose of the historic vaccine.
Somalia got its first batch of 300,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine on Monday this week.
On Tuesday, Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur, the Minister of Health, was the first person in Somalia to be vaccinated as the country launched a COVID-19 vaccination campaign.
Later the same day, President Farmaajo also received the vaccine.
The President said that he had to set a good example to the rest of the country.
“We have to flatten the curve by observing measures designed to curb the spread of the disease around the country,” President Farmaajo said.
Currently, the East African nation is on the first phase of the vaccination exercise.
This first phase targets frontline workers in the health and security sectors. The elderly are also targeted in this phase.
