President Mohamed Farmaajo has reopened the biggest sports stadium in Somalia.
Mogadishu Stadium, with a capacity of 65,000, was initially opened in 1977 during the reign of President Siad Barre’s administration.
It suffered years of neglect during the Civil War of the 1990s and in the 2000s when Al-Shabaab captured Mogadishu and banned all sporting activities.
However, the government has been rebuilding it since 2013 with the help of various international partners, including FIFA.
On June 30, 2020, President Farmaajo reopened it after years of renovation and reconstruction.
However, during the reopening ceremony, no spectators were allowed inside the stadium for security reasons and because of COVID-19 fears.
