President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has sent top Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) officials to discuss his term extension with international partners.
One of the government officials sent is Osman Dubbe, the Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism.
Others are Balal Mohamed Cusman, State Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Abdi Ali Rage, a presidential advisor.
The decision by the House of Representatives (Lower House) to extend Farmaajo’s term in office by two years has proved quite controversial.
Dubbe, Cusman, and Rage are reportedly at Halane Base Camp, where they have camped to speak with the representatives of Somalia’s international partners.
Their mission is to convince international partners that Farmaajo had nothing to do with the decision by the Lower House to extend his term.
Farmaajo’s term expired on February 8, 2021.
Since then, a series of meetings involving Somali leaders and other stakeholders has taken place to resolve the electoral impasse.
Somalia has been unable to hold either parliamentary or presidential elections despite the polls being due in December 2020 and February 2021 respectively.
