Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has expressed support for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s initiative to hold a national dialogue aimed at combating terrorism and advancing democracy.
In a statement posted on his social media accounts, Farmaajo emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and urged political stakeholders at both federal and state levels to engage in consultations and reach consensus to address the nation’s challenges.
Farmaajo highlighted the significance of fostering a political environment grounded in trust and cooperation, adhering to the constitution, and avoiding unilateral actions that could threaten national unity and governance. He underscored the need for extensive consultations on constitutional amendments, governance, and ongoing counter-terrorism efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab.
The former President also called upon both chambers of parliament to collaborate harmoniously and refrain from enacting legislation that contradicts established constitutional laws. His statement aligns with concerns raised by other former leaders about the risks of unilateral constitutional changes.
Farmaajo’s endorsement of the national dialogue reflects a broader consensus among Somali leaders on the necessity of inclusive consultations to navigate the country’s political landscape and address pressing issues.
