Farmaajo Urges Increased Security Partnerships between Somalia and the US

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has called for increased security partnerships between his country and the United States.

Farmaajo spoke after reports from the US indicated that President Donald Trump is considering pulling his troops out of the East African nation.

US troops have played a significant role in training Somalia’s military personnel and in leading the war against terrorism.

However, Trump feels that the US troops have already played their part and can do no more.

Consequently, he has ordered his military and security advisors to prepare a plan for withdrawing the country’s troops out of Somalia.

However, on Friday, Farmaajo spoke about this by saying that the military support from the US over the years has enabled Somalia to “effectively combat Al-Shabaab and secure the region.”

He urged President Trump’s administration to rethink their plans by calling for “continuous security partnership.”

Further, he also recommended increased investments and support in “capacity building” to take Somalia’s military to the next level.
