Farmers in Hiiraan continue to suffer as floods from the River Shabelle rock the area for the third time in the last twelve months.
The floods have caused mayhem considering that farmers were expected to start picking their harvests within the next one month.
One of the farmers, Mohamed Abdullahi Wayel, said he had lost maize, tomatoes, beans, potatoes, and pumpkins.
Speaking to Radio Ergo, Mohamed said, “I’m bitter because River Shabelle has burst its banks again thus causing farmers in the region huge losses.”
Mohamed said he and other farmers were forced to flee the region to move to higher areas when the floodwaters arrived.
A local administrator, Osman Nur Rahole, confirmed that the floods hit the area on August 15.
He confirmed that local authorities placed sandbags, which they had bought on credit, along the riverbanks but that never helped.
