Federal MP Questions President Mohamud’s Commitment in Holding Direct Elections

Somalia’s House of the People legislator, Sadiq Abdi, raised concerns on Thursday regarding President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s commitment to conducting direct elections.

Amid ongoing efforts to establish a more democratic electoral process, the legislator from Jubbaland criticized the federal government for failing to ensure adequate representation for the Southwest state community within the Banaadir region.

Abdi accused the President of prioritizing the appointments of loyalists over embracing a democratic approach that would better reflect the will of the broader electorate.

His remarks underscore ongoing debates within Somalia about representation and fair political inclusion, especially as the country aims to transition toward direct elections.
