Female Journalists Trained on Safety and Security in Mogadishu

Female journalists based in Mogadishu were trained on safety and security while performing their professional duties.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) organized the training.

During the training, Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ’s Secretary General, said that journalism in Somalia has fewer female voices.

He mentioned that the few women working in this male-dominated field must be protected and educated more on their safety and security while at work.

According to Osman, the few women journalists in the country are exposed to frequent attacks.

In his view, “women journalists are attacked in their professional capacity and also as women.”

Yusuf Hassan, a veteran Somali journalist, also got an opportunity to address participants at the Safety and Security Training for Female Journalists.

Hassan encouraged the few women journalists in the East African nation telling them not to quit or despair in the face of the seemingly insurmountable challenges they face.
