FESOJ Asks for Careful Coverage of COVID-19 in Somalia

The Federation of Somalia Journalists (FESOJ) has urged journalists and media houses to be careful with their coverage of COVID-19 in the country.

Somalia confirmed its first case of the virus last week. Since then, the global pandemic has received widespread coverage by journalists in the country.

Furthermore, FESOJ recommends the country’s media to be accurate with their reports on the virus to avoid disseminating falsehoods and causing panic in the Horn of Africa nation.

Social media users in the country have been at the forefront in spreading unfounded rumors and myths on COVID-19. They mostly do this on Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp.

Additionally, FESOJ advised journalists covering the pandemic to avoid risking their lives unnecessarily. It has asked them to adhere to the CPJ Safety Advisory.
