The Federation of Somali Journalists (FESOJ) has lauded the decision by the Attorney General to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate crimes against journalists in the country.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Dr. Suleiman Mohamed Mohamud, the Attorney General, had appointed a prosecutor to specifically open investigations on crimes against journalists.
An official statement from the Office of the Attorney General stated that the prosecutor would be mandated to investigate the killing of journalists in the East African nation.
On Thursday, FESOJ released a statement expressing its delight at the latest development.
While welcoming the news, Mohamed Moalimuu, FESOJ’s Secretary General, stated that the Special Prosecutor must “come up with real actions” on what he intends to do.
Moalimuu said that courts and security offices around the country are replete with unresolved cases touching on journalists murdered in the line of duty.
FESOJ asserted that journalists in Somalia continue to work under “dire circumstances.”
He urged authorities to change Somalia’s ranking as one of the most dangerous places in the world for journalists to work.
