The Federation of Somali Trade Unionists (FESTU) has welcomed the decision by the cabinet to appoint new members to join the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
Legal experts and leaders of opposition parties in the country have faulted the move to appoint five members into JSC, though.
However, FESTU released a press statement indicating its support for the move made by the Council of Ministers (CoM) on July 30, 2020.
FESTU says it hopes the decision would “promote the administration of justice” around the country.
Further, FESTU offers its support to a decision it hopes would lead to the “expeditious appointment of judges into the constitutional court.”
In its statement, the labor group said the country has struggled with a backlog of cases at the judiciary. Therefore, it supports a move that would ease the backlog.
