MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s Council of Ministers met on Thursday in Mogadishu under the leadership of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, ending the week with major policy decisions aimed at protecting human rights, modernizing key infrastructure, and strengthening the country’s global partnerships.
One of the most significant outcomes of the session was the unanimous approval of a groundbreaking law banning Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) nationwide. The move marks a historic step in safeguarding the health and dignity of Somali girls and women.
The Cabinet also endorsed the National Strategy for Women, Peace, and Security, reaffirming the “DanQaran” government’s commitment to expanding women’s participation in peacebuilding, leadership, and national development.
The ministers went on to approve several important measures designed to expand Somalia’s international engagement and economic potential. They endorsed a cooperation agreement with Rwanda aimed at enhancing diplomatic and development ties between the two countries.
They also adopted the National Ports Strategy, a plan focused on upgrading Somalia’s maritime facilities to improve trade and revenue management. In addition, the Council approved Somalia’s participation in the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) Convention, which will allow the country to benefit from global satellite services that enhance communication networks and maritime safety.
Despite the week’s notable progress, the worsening humanitarian situation remained a central concern. Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner Mahamuud Moallim Abdulle briefed the Cabinet on the ongoing drought, warning that 4.4 million people now urgently need assistance. He outlined the current response efforts and the steps being taken to support affected communities.
Prime Minister Barre responded by urging all relevant government institutions to speed up emergency relief operations, emphasizing that protecting vulnerable citizens must remain the government’s highest priority.
The meeting also featured updates on the national security situation and reflections from the recent Somali Judiciary Conference, helping shape the government’s ongoing reform agenda.
