Fighting has broken out between the FGS army and regional troops.
The fight took place at Bula Hawa, which is close to the country’s borders with Ethiopia and Kenya.
For several hours, the heavy exchange of gunfire crippled business along the border.
The government in Mogadishu has been in a standoff with Jubaland officials for almost a year since the 2019 heavily disputed regional election.
Last year, FGS arrested the security minister of Jubaland, Abdirashid Janan. The government then detained him in Mogadishu after accusing him of gross human rights atrocities.
In January 2020, Janan escaped from custody and crossed over to Kenya where he has been ever since.
Since his escape, Somali authorities have sent several appeals to Kenya’s government to repatriate Janan.
