Somalia’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Moalim Fiqi, has arrived in Addis Ababa, as part of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s delegation, in what is regarded as a historic visit.
Fiqi made his first visit to Ethiopia since being made the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in April 2024.
Fiqi took on the position just four months after diplomatic tensions escalated between Somalia and Ethiopia due to the latter’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland in January 2024.
The MoU, which reportedly involved discussions over access to the Red Sea via Somaliland, was strongly opposed by Somalia, which views Somaliland as part of its territory.
President Mohamud is in Addis Ababa for the African Union Summit, where he will join other leaders from the continent in electing the new chairperson of the AU Commission (AUC).
