Fiqi Urges UNOPS to Increase Non-Lethal Support to Somali Army

Mogadishu, Somalia – Ahmed Moallim Fiqi has called on the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to increase non-lethal support to the Somali National Army (SNA).

Fiqi, Somalia’s Minister of Defence, made this call on Wednesday during his meeting with the UNOPS Country Director, Ala’a Nemer, for high-level discussions.

Their discussions focused on strengthening collaboration between the Ministry of Defence and UNOPS.

The meeting reviewed UNOPS’ ongoing non-lethal support to the Somali National Army (SNA), aimed at enhancing operational effectiveness and sustainability.

Both parties also discussed the digital transformation of the Ministry of Defence through the Somali Joint Government Assistance Program (SJGAP), an ICT-driven initiative focused on modernizing systems and improving institutional performance.

Fiqi welcomed UNOPS’ commitment and emphasized the importance of practical solutions in building a professional and accountable defence sector.

The two sides reaffirmed their shared goals of institutional strengthening, transparency, and resilience in Somalia’s security architecture.

The SJGAP initiative is aligned with broader government reforms aimed at improving service delivery, accountability, and digital governance in key ministries.
