Algiers, Algeria – The initial group of Somali students receiving scholarships from the Algerian government has reached Algeria, as announced by the Somali Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Ali Mohamed Omar, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, met with 27 students: 25 male and 2 female, who form part of 45 Somali students now studying at Algerian universities. The bilateral pact provides 120 scholarships across fields such as cybersecurity.
The minister noted that these scholarships arise from wider cooperation deals signed by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, encompassing education, foreign affairs, livestock, and natural gas areas.
President Tebboune had earlier pledged 500 extra scholarships for Somali students in key sectors like agriculture and energy, to advance Somalia’s development aims.
The program highlights the expanding relations between Somalia and Algeria, timed with President Mohamud’s official trip to Algeria to bolster ties in education, trade, and security.
