FNP Demands Resignation of All NIEC Commissioners

The coalition of opposition parties in Somalia, Forum for National Parties (FNP), has demanded the resignation of all electoral commissioners.

FNP accuses the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) commissioners of failing to perform their work as stipulated in the constitution.

The coalition released a statement condemning the failure by NIEC to hold elections on schedule.

Late last week, NIEC briefed the federal parliament on preparations for the upcoming polls.

NIEC, through its Chairperson, Halima Ismail Ibrahim, stated its inability to hold elections on November 27, 2020.

It also said the presidential elections, which are due on February 2021, would not take place on time either.

FNP now says that NIEC has lost public trust and stakeholders no longer believe it has the capacity to fulfill its mandate.

Consequently, FNP has demanded immediate resignation of all commissioners at the poll agency to allow a better team to step in and guide Somalia through the election process.
