A grassroots football tournament for promoting peace in El-Afweyn kicked off on Sunday.
The tournament, which has been described as a “milestone” by local organizers, has been in the pipeline for a long time.
Organizers of the El-Afweyn Peace Trophy, say it is open to six of the local football teams.
Its goal is to encourage the warring parties in the region to bury the hatchet and embrace the pacification process already underway.
Several current and past local cabinet ministers graced the launching of the tournament and pledged their support to the peace process.
Winners will receive medals in addition to the Peace Cup too.
All participating teams have been handed shorts, vests, and footballs for training and actual matches.
The tournament represents one of the many measures local leaders have put in place to promote peace in El-Afweyn and the surrounding regions.
