Somalia’s former president, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has condemned the decision by the administration of President Mohamed Farmaajo to arrest Abdiaziz Gurbiye.
Mohamud went further to call the arrest and detention of Gurbiye, who is the Editor of Goobjoog Media Group, a sign of growing dictatorship in the country.
The former head of state also said, “Somali culture abhors the suppression of freedom of expression.”
He also said the country’s budding democracy does not need the “underhand tactics” that President Farmaajo’s government uses to silence journalists in the Horn of Africa nation.
Mohamud, who is the leader of the UDP party, asked the country’s leadership to desist from returning the country to the era of the strongman. Instead, he asked it to embrace democracy.
President Mohamud is the latest leader to condemn Gurbiye’s arrest. He joins professional groups, journalists’ union, and politicians who have added their voice on this issue too.
