A former president of Somalia, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, has claimed that a huge bulk of COVID-19 donations ended up in Mogadishu’s black market.
Somalia has received planeloads of medical donations from different organizations and international partners.
Some of the biggest donors include the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, the United States, the United Nations, and Qatar.
However, the claims by President Ahmed are likely to cause shock in a country that is struggling to contain the spread of COVID-19.
Thus far, the country has recorded over 1,500 COVID-19 cases, 61 deaths, and 211 recoveries. Its tallies are among the highest in the region.
Ahmed made these sensational claims while celebrating Eid-al-Fitr in Mogadishu.
He claims that many of the donations, especially the medical supplies and equipment, are visible in the streets of Mogadishu.
Nevertheless, Ahmed is yet to offer any tangible evidence for his claims.
