Former Somali Federal Minister is the New Director of IGAD’s Center of Excellence

A former federal minister in the Somali government has joined the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) as one of its newest directors.

Jamal Mohamed Hassan is the director of IGAD’s Center of Excellence.

The announcement of Hassan’s choice as the new director of the IGAD Center of Excellence for Climate Adaptation and Environmental Protection was announced on September 4.

Over the last decade, Hassan has played a critical role in Somali politics.

He served as Somali Ambassador to Kenya from 2015 to 2017.

In the last five years, he returned to Somalia to vie for a parliamentary seat. He won the elections and has been a Member of Parliament (MP) for the last five years.

His appointment to join IGAD comes at a time when Somalia has increased its efforts to join the regional block.
