Former Somali Leaders Warn of Civil Unrest if Elections are Delayed

Several former state and government leaders have warned that Somalia risks falling into civil unrest if elections are delayed.

The leaders, who include Ali Mahdi, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, all former Presidents of Somalia, warned the current administration against postponing the polls.

They expressed this view in Mogadishu on Monday.

The former leaders spoke at an event held in honor of the Mudulood Clan, which is arguably the largest clan in Mogadishu.

Thousands of participants also attended the event and these included mayors (both present and former), top diplomats, and senior military officers.

Ex-President Ali Mahdi expressed his worry that the country could slide back into civil war in case Farmaajo refuses to hold elections on time as the constitution stipulates.

The former leaders were meeting for the second time this year. They held their first meeting in February in Mogadishu.
