A former Somalia minister has called for Benadir Hospital to be renamed Mama Hawa Abdi Hospital in honor of the award-winning humanitarian and doctor who died this week.
Abdi Aynte, who once served as Somalia’s Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, said Dr. Hawa Abdi had done a lot for the country.
Dr. Abdi passed away this week and her family has been receiving an outpouring of messages of condolences since then.
The deceased medic is renowned for her role in fighting for the rights of mothers and children.
Aynte’s suggestion is informed by the fact that Benadir Hospital is the premier mother-child hospital in the Horn of African nation.
Consequently, it would be the ideal facility to rename in Dr. Abdi’s honor.
Similarly, the country’s Minister of Health, Dr. Fawziya Abikar Nur, lent her support to Aynte’s suggestion on Twitter.
She thanked Aynte for the suggestion and indicated that the renaming of Benadir Hospital after the late Dr. Abdi is the least she deserves as a top medic and humanitarian.
