Former Somali President Accuses Government of Delaying Maritime Case against Kenya

Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the former president of Somalia, has accused the government of President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of delaying the maritime case against Kenya.

According to President Mohamud, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has not done much to ensure that the case proceeds on schedule.

The case, which has been filed at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), has been postponed yet again. ICJ now says the case is up for hearing next year.

Somalia has been wrangling with Kenya over a stretch of the Indian Ocean. The disputed area is allegedly rich in oil.

The maritime dispute has soured relations between the two Horn of Africa nations.

President Mohamud’s administration filed the case with ICJ back in 2015 when talks between the two neighbors collapsed.

According to Mohamud, Farmaajo’s administration has been lying to Somalis about the status of the case for years.

Mohamud lost to Farmaajo in the hotly contested elections of 2017.
