Former Somali President Says Farmaajo Not Interested in Elections

A former President of the Federal Republic of Somalia has accused the current one of not being interested in holding elections.

Ex-President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said that outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo has no interest in presidential elections.

Thus far, Somalia has only held elections for Upper House seats at the regional state level.

Parliamentary and presidential elections should be taking place before the end of the year, which increasingly looks improbable.

On Friday September 17, ex-President Mohamud said this while addressing the media.

In his media address, Mohamud said that Farmaajo’s term as the President had expired.

Moreover, he said that Farmaajo had already handed to Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble the powers to not only secure but also ensure that elections take place.

Farmaajo did this while appointing Roble as the Prime Minister in May 2021.

Mohamud also called upon Farmaajo to be remorseful over the murder of Ikran Tahlil, a female officer with the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA).
