Former Somali Presidents Slam Iran’s Attack on Qatar as ‘Aggression’

Former Somali Presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo have separately condemned Iran’s recent attack on Qatar, calling it “a reckless act of aggression” that “flagrantly violates” international law.

In their statements released on Tuesday, both leaders expressed deep concern over the military action, which they said “undermines Qatar’s sovereignty, threatens regional stability, and risks further escalation across the Middle East.”

Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Somalia’s President from 2009 to 2012, urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and work toward diplomatic solutions, warning that military confrontations “will only deepen regional tensions and prolong suffering for civilians.”

Similarly, former President Farmaajo, who led Somalia from 2017 to 2022, stated that such attacks run counter to the principles of peaceful coexistence. He called on the international community to hold Iran accountable and to support efforts that safeguard international law and regional peace.

Both leaders reaffirmed Somalia’s solidarity with Qatar and emphasized the importance of respecting state sovereignty and upholding international norms.

The attack has triggered widespread condemnation across the Arab world, with many leaders calling for immediate de-escalation to prevent a wider crisis.

Iran targeted United States bases in Qatar as retaliation for the bombing of several nuclear sites in the country by the Americans on Sunday.

US planes bombed three nuclear sites in Iran, which is currently embroiled in a huge war with Israel.

Recent reports show that the Iranians informed Qatari officials on the plan to bomb the US based to avoid causing costly loss of life and extensive damage to property.
