Abdiwali Gatamow, a former popular footballer who excelled as a goalkeeper, was shot and killed by unknown gunmen in Afgoye.
The incident, which happened on Thursday just outside a local mosque, left residents and worshippers shocked.
Gatamow, a 40-year old retired footballer, had just taken part in Tarawih prayers at the mosque when unknown gunmen accosted and shot him to death.
Afgoye has been the scene of increased battles between Al-Shabaab extremists and government troops in the recent past.
The exact number of gunmen who committed this crime remains unascertained. Nevertheless, multiple witnesses have confirmed that they were all armed with pistols.
Thereafter, the killers fled the scene immediately after committing what locals and authorities call a “heinous crime.”
The retired footballer, who was named Abdiweli Olad Qanyare at birth, was coaching Mogadishu City Club, which is owned and run by the local municipality.
Authorities have also said that the motive behind is killing remains unclear too. However, investigations have commenced.
