Four Somalia Government Officials Sent to Prison for Theft of Public Funds

Mogadishu’s Regional Court has sentenced four senior government officers to prison terms ranging from one-and-a-half years to 10 years for theft of public funds.

The court passed its judgment on Thursday.

Guled Mohamed Ibrahim, an employee of the Ministry of Fisheries working under the Admin and Finance Department, was sentenced to 10 years with a fine of $2,366.

Further, the court ordered that he should repay the $137,907 he was convicted of stealing.

Ali Sheikhdon Abdi, who works at the General Accountants office, was sentenced to nine years in prison and fined $3,549 while ordered to pay back the $58,555 that he stole.

Aweys Hassan Omar, a finance officer at the Ministry of Information, has been given a prison sentence of 18 months in addition to a fine of $1,183.

Khadar Aweys Hassan, who owns a private firm in Somalia, has received a sentence of three years imprisonment and a fine of $1,183.

This represents the second time in a week that courts in Somalia are sentencing government officers to prison and slapping them with hefty fines for corruption.
