FSG Rejects AU’s Endorsement of Joint Mission in Somalia

The Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) has rejected the African Union’s endorsement of joint mission in Somalia.

Recently, the AU’s Peace and Security Council endorsed plans to put up a joint mission in Somalia together with the United Nations.

If approved, the joint mission would take over from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

AMISOM’s mandate is expected to expire in 2022.

Once AMISOM departs from Somalia, over 22,000 troops from several African countries who serve under it would also return home.

AU’s plans for a joint mission emerged on October 11.

They were part of the resolutions signed under Chapter VII.

According to Mogadishu, these plans would not bolster security in Somalia.

The Somali government has been anticipating the handing over of all security operations in the country.
