Mogadishu – The African Union (AU) has taken a significant step toward making its Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) fully operational. This comes with the deployment of additional troops and the approval of the mission’s operational framework — a critical move designed to bolster Somalia’s security, support its national army, and advance broader peacebuilding initiatives across the region.
AUSSOM, the successor to the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), seeks to help the Somali National Army consolidate control over liberated territories and enhance the government’s capacity to maintain stability. The mission will also focus on protecting civilians, facilitating humanitarian access, and working closely with regional and international partners to foster long-term resilience.
This latest development underscores a renewed commitment from the international community to support Somalia in its fight against extremist groups and its quest for lasting peace. The AU’s emphasis on strengthening local capacity and institutional sustainability is seen as a key part of its strategy to help Somalia achieve a peaceful, stable, and prosperous future.
Analysts believe that sustained support under the new operational framework will contribute to the ongoing transition of security responsibilities to Somali forces, paving the way for greater self-reliance. The coming months will be crucial in measuring the impact of these efforts on Somalia’s security landscape.
