Galmudug Troops Arrive in Maxaas to Support Fight Against Al-Shabaab

Maxaas, Hiiraan Region – Troops from Guriceel in Galmudug State have arrived in Maxaas district, located in Somalia’s Hiiraan region, to reinforce local communities and allied forces in their ongoing battle against the militant group Al-Shabaab.

According to reports from local journalists, the deployment marks a significant show of solidarity between regional administrations in the national effort to eradicate the insurgency. The arrival of Galmudug forces is seen as part of a broader coordination between federal member states and local militias—often referred to as Macawiisley—to liberate territories still under Al-Shabaab control.

Residents of Maxaas welcomed the reinforcements, expressing hope that the added military presence would boost security and help stabilize surrounding areas that have frequently been targeted by the extremist group.

Military officials have not disclosed the number of troops deployed, but sources on the ground indicated that the contingent is well-equipped and includes infantry units trained in counterinsurgency operations.

The deployment comes amid an intensified campaign by the Somali National Army (SNA), supported by local forces and international partners, to dismantle Al-Shabaab’s strongholds in central Somalia. Maxaas has been a strategic flashpoint in the conflict, given its position linking the Galgaduud and Hiiraan regions.

Security analysts believe the reinforcement demonstrates growing inter-regional cooperation and could signal further joint operations in the weeks ahead.

Al-Shabaab, which has waged an insurgency in Somalia for over a decade, continues to pose a major threat to peace and stability in the country. However, recent months have seen an uptick in offensive operations by Somali forces, supported by AUSSOM troops and international partners, leading to the recapture of several key areas.

Local leaders and residents in Hiiraan have repeatedly called for more support from the central government and neighboring states. The arrival of the Galmudug troops appears to be a direct response to that appeal.

Efforts to coordinate troop movements and operations are expected to continue as Somali authorities push forward with their national stabilization strategy.
