Abdisabir Shurie, the Minister of Ports and Fisheries in the Galmudug State, launched the construction of Hobyo Port on November 9.

Shurie, who also serves as a Member of Somalia’s House of Representatives, laid the foundation stone for the port’s construction.

The minister reiterated his pleasure at the opportunity granted him to lay the foundation.

The construction of the new fishing port is a joint project between the Galmudug administration, the Italian government, and the World Food Program (WFP) in Somalia.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo’s administration has also given its blessings to the project.

Shurie stated that the port would handle boats measuring up to 20 meters.

According to the ports and fisheries minister, it would also scale up fishing capacity while improving food security for the people of Galmudug and those around the country too.
