Germany Strengthens Ties with Somalia in High-Level Visit by Ambassador Buck

Mogadishu, Somalia – Germany’s Director General for Political Affairs, Ambassador Christian Buck, paid a visit to Mogadishu this week for wide-ranging talks aimed at reinforcing cooperation and supporting Somalia’s ongoing journey toward peace and stability.

Amb. Buck met with Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre at the Office of the Prime Minister, where discussions focused on Somalia’s current political landscape, governance reforms, and the federal government’s efforts to consolidate unity and strengthen state institutions. The visit reflected Berlin’s sustained commitment to Somalia’s progress and its support for locally driven solutions to the country’s challenges.

While in Mogadishu, Amb. Buck also held meetings with Türkiye’s Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, and senior officials from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), including Deputy Head Mouktar Osman. The talks highlighted the importance of coordinated international and regional engagement as Somalia advances through its security transition and prepares for the next phase of peacekeeping realignment.

Germany has long been a key development and diplomatic partner to Somalia, contributing to governance programs, humanitarian assistance, and efforts to build sustainable peace. Amb. Buck’s visit reaffirmed Berlin’s readiness to deepen this partnership, focusing on stability, inclusive politics, and resilience in the face of ongoing security and climate challenges.

The visit underscored a shared understanding between Germany and Somalia that lasting peace requires both political inclusivity and international solidarity—principles that continue to guide their partnership in shaping Somalia’s future.
