Government Critics Arrested and Jailed in Somaliland

On Thursday, the government arrested and jailed one more opposition politician thus bringing the number of critics in detention to three.

Mohamed Adan Saleebaan, who leads Waddani Party in Awdal Province, became the latest victim of the government’s policy of arresting and detaining its harshest critics.

He was arrested on Thursday early in the morning before being rushed to a local police station, where he is in custody.

According to multiple sources, authorities are yet to file any charges against Saleebaan. He now joins his colleagues who have also faced the wrath of the government in recent times.

One of these is Mohamed Abib of the ruling party, who found himself in hot soup after criticizing the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic mid this month.

Another politician to have fallen foul with the government is Abdifatah Unity, who is in detention for a statement issued against authorities.

All the three men are from Awdal region.

Jamal Hussein Ahmed, the Secretary General of Somaliland Human Rights Center and Somaliland Lawyers Association, say they were arrested for statements posted on social media.
