Mogadishu, Somalia – The Governor of the Benadir Regional Administration and Mayor of Mogadishu, Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Mungab, officially launched the rehabilitation and dredging project for the Boondheere District catchment area (Warta Boondheere) on Wednesday.
This initiative forms a significant part of the broader infrastructure development strategy currently being implemented by the Mogadishu Local Government to modernize the capital’s essential services.
In his address at the ceremony, Gov. Mungab highlighted the strategic importance of the project, noting that the Boondheere pond serves as a vital water catchment basin for five separate districts within the Benadir region. He stated that the rehabilitation will substantially improve the city’s drainage system, reduce flood risks during the rainy seasons, and facilitate smoother movement for both vehicular traffic and pedestrians in surrounding areas.
The Governor announced that the maintenance – and dredging – of the facility is fully funded by the Mogadishu Municipality. He revealed that this marks the third project of its kind to be officially launched, following similar interventions targeting key drainage systems across the capital, some of which are currently under construction.
Addressing national priorities, Gov. Mungab utilized the platform to discuss the upcoming electoral process. He urged residents of the Benadir region to exercise their constitutional rights with a high sense of civic responsibility. The Mayor called upon the public to actively participate in the local council elections scheduled for December 25, encouraging them to play a decisive role in shaping the administrative and developmental future of their city.
