Deputy Prime Minister Mahdi M. Gulaid has apologized to opposition candidates for saying that his side would win the presidential elections in the first round.
The Deputy Prime Minister made these comments in November 2020.
Opposition candidates vying the country’s presidency rose up with one voice to condemn his comments.
According to them, Gulaid’s comments were further proof of the government’s plans to manipulate the elections results.
Somalia is scheduled to hold presidential elections in early 2021.
Initially, the East African nation was scheduled to hold the elections in February 2021, a move that seems more improbable with the ongoing impasse.
Gulaid apologized when he addressed the Heritage Institute for Policy Studies (HIPS) annual forum that is taking place in Garowe, Puntland.
