On Monday evening, gunfire was reported inside the main central prison in Mogadishu, local residents have confirmed.
Reports indicate that the fighting was between Al-Shabaan inmates at the prison and prison wardens.
Initially, it was unclear how the inmates accessed weapons, which they used in the attack.
However, prison authorities have now confirmed that upon accessing the weapons, the inmates engaged guards in a lengthy gunfight.
A security source at the scene confirmed that at least four Al-Shabaab fighters took part in the incident.
Nevertheless, order has now been restored at the scene.
