MOGADISHU — Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has convened high-level discussions with China’s Ambassador to Somalia, Wang Yu, to establish a robust political and security framework against external threats to Somalia’s territorial integrity. The meeting follows a significant diplomatic rift caused by the recent recognition of the breakaway region of Somaliland by the Israeli government in late December 2025.
Solidifying the Diplomatic Front
Prime Minister Barre underscored the Federal Government’s unshakeable resolve to safeguard national unity, describing recent external actions as “naked interference.” He restated that the administration will not compromise on its sovereignty, noting that protecting the nation’s borders is a prerequisite for long-term stability. Ambassador Wang Yu formally reiterated the People’s Republic of China’s full support for the Federal Republic of Somalia. Key points of agreement included:
-
International Law Compliance: Both parties affirmed that according to the UN Charter, Somaliland remains an integral part of Somali territory.
-
UNSC Coordination: The Prime Minister expressed appreciation for China’s “principled solidarity” at the United Nations Security Council, where Chinese diplomats recently defended Somalia’s sovereignty against unilateral external actions.
-
Mutual Interests: The leaders agreed to enhance coordination to ensure that regional security transitions are not exploited by outside actors for geopolitical gain.
Security and Statehood
A core component of the discussions focused on the link between internal stability and national defense. Prime Minister Barre detailed the government’s ongoing offensive against militant factions, noting that defeating domestic terrorism is vital to maintaining statehood and resisting foreign encroachment.
The Prime Minister concluded by thanking China for its swift diplomatic response, highlighting that steadfast international support is essential to bolstering Somalia’s global position.
