Several senior officials from the Ministry of Health in Somalia appeared in court to face corruption charges.
The charges state that they embezzled donor funds. They were also accused of stealing donor funds a month after the Federal Government of Somalia started investigating them.
Furthermore, the funds the officials were accused of embezzling and stealing were meant for the fight against COVID-19, which continues to ravage the country.
The more than 20 officials are linked to a scandal that saw the East African nation lose millions of US$ to fraudulent schemes.
Consequently, donors threatened to cancel aid to the Horn of Africa country unless those responsible for this brazen theft are held liable.
