Heavily Fortified Halane Base Camp Rocked by Mortar Shells

A heavily fortified base camp in Mogadishu was the target of intense mortar shells on March 9.

Reports from the capital city indicate that Halane Base Camp, which houses United Nations offices and other agencies, came under heavy attack on Tuesday.

Apparently, at least three mortar shells were hurled at the facility.

Security sources fear that a number of people could have either lost their lives or suffered injuries from the attack.

However, the casualties are yet to be fully confirmed.

Western diplomatic missions and the African Union have their offices at the Halane Base Camp.

The attack comes a few hours before talks between Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and Federal Member States (FMS) are scheduled to kick off in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the mortar shells attack.
