Horn of Africa countries are grappling with a “catastrophic” shortage of water, the United Nations has warned.
The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned that the situation is getting dire in the region in its latest report published on August 24.
UNICEF announced that residents of this region are at risk of massive deaths.
“Water insecurity is a huge problem in the region owing to the failed rains in several consecutive seasons over the last few years,” UNICEF says in its statement.
Specifically, the organization said the problem is quite prevalent in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
In its estimation, more than 16.2 million people in the region have no access to safe water.
Consequently, the region is likely to experience several health issues such as severe malnutrition and an increase in waterborne diseases.
