Countries in the Horn of Africa region will receive additional humanitarian assistance worth $1.2 billion from the United States.
The US government has pledged an additional $1.2 billion to countries in the region.
The additional funds would help the countries to feed their people who are currently in despair in the face of the ongoing drought.
Samantha Power, the Administration of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) confirmed this development on Tuesday, July 19.
She was speaking at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
Power said that tens of millions of people in the region are at risk of facing not only grave hunger but also outright starvation.
She mentioned that the funds would help vulnerable people and households in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
The funding would include emergency food such as sorghum.
It would include peanut-based supplements for young children and veterinary services to care for dying livestock.
