Hosh Briefed on Progress of Somalia’s Digital Civil Registration System

The Civil Registration Directorate briefed Ali Yusuf Hosh, the Minister of Interior, Federal Affairs, and Reconciliation, on the progress in Somalia’s Digital Civil Registration System.

This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to modernizing civil registration processes, which is a critical step toward ensuring accurate and reliable documentation for all citizens.

Digital Infrastructure Development

The Directorate briefed Hosh on the progress made in establishing the technological backbone for the system, such as databases, software, and secure networks to store and manage civil registration data.

Data Collection and Integration

Hosh was brought up to speed on efforts in collecting and digitizing existing civil records, including birth, marriage, and death certificates, and integrate them into a unified digital system.

Accessibility and Inclusivity

Measures designed to ensure that all citizens, including those in remote or underserved areas, can access the system and obtain necessary documentation were part of the presentations to the minister too.

Security and Privacy

This involves implementation of robust data protection measures to safeguard sensitive personal information and prevent unauthorized access or misuse.

Capacity Building

This would include training for government officials and staff to effectively manage and operate the digital system, ensuring its sustainability and efficiency, according to the presentation to Hosh.

Public Awareness Campaigns

Several initiatives to educate citizens about the importance of civil registration and how to utilize the new digital system will be launched all over the country.

This modernization effort is crucial for Somalia, as it lays the foundation for improved governance, better public service delivery, and enhanced legal and social protections for citizens.

Reliable civil registration is also essential for planning and development, as it provides accurate demographic data that can inform policy decisions and resource allocation.
