Somalia has been broiled in intertribal fighting and conflicts for years. Al-Shabaab menace has also grown increasingly worse in the last ten years. According to health and security officials, the militia has now become a huge threat on COVID-19 efforts in the country.
Despite the best efforts by Somalis to create a functional state, none of that seems to be producing the desired results, as Al-Shabaab continues wrecking havoc in the country. The decision by Somalis and their international partners to work together is not as productive too.
In 2020, the country, just as is the case in the rest of the world, grapples with the threat of COVID-19. Some 390 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed by the country’s Ministry of Health, which also announced that 18 patients have died.
Al-Shabaab has taken advantage of the measures the government has put in place to antagonize innocent civilians. Further, it has carried out several attacks against security forces in the country.
All these attacks have created an atmosphere of fear, uncertainty, and instability. Al-Shabaab’s efforts come despite the appeal by UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to armed groups around the world to end hostilities and allow governments to curb the spread of COVID-19.
