Huge Breakthrough in Dhusamareb Talks on Electoral Model

President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo and the three regional leaders in Dhusamareb have reached an agreement on electoral model.

Farmaajo, representing the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) and the leaders representing the Federal Member States (FMS) have been meeting in Dhusamareb since Monday.

Two other regional leaders, President Said Abdullahi Deni of Puntland and President Ahmed Islam Madobe of Jubbaland, opted to skip the talks.

However, reports from Dhusamareb indicate that the participants have finally reached an agreement on the model to be used in Somalia’s upcoming elections.

The model agreed on is known as constituency caucuses.

A communiqué issued from Dhusamareb indicates that each caucus will comprise 301 delegates.

The delegates will then vote for a parliamentary seat in elections supervised by the National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC).

Farmaajo announced breakthrough in the talks via his verified Twitter handle on Thursday night.

In his tweet, he also reached out to Deni and Madobe, who skipped the talks, asking them to join the rest of the country in preparing for the upcoming elections.

With this model in place, Somalia seems to have given up on the quest for one-person-one-vote system that had been championed for a long time.
