Human-Caused Environmental Degradation Responsible for Somali Droughts

Human-caused environmental degradation is responsible for the recurrent droughts and other natural calamities in Somalia.

A report by the SIDRA Institute of Somalia cites negative human activities against the environment as the factors most responsible for causing droughts.

According to the SIDRA Institute report, Somalia has lost 70-90 percent of all its valley vegetation due to these activities.

The report warns Somalis to prepare for more deforestation and droughts in the coming years unless urgent measures are taken to reverse the situation.

Unless that happens, rural communities around the country would have to contend with increased threats to their livelihoods too.
