Save the Children has issued a warning of impending humanitarian crisis after 150,000 children fled from regions affected by the ongoing floods in Somalia.
Over the past few weeks, heavy and erratic rainfall in Somalia has caused a new wave of flash floods that threaten the lives of children.
According to Save the Children, the children are not alone in their suffering since their families are equally affected.
Furthermore, the fact that the floods have submerged and destroyed over 33,000ha of farmland exacerbates the situation thus calling for fast solutions to avoid a humanitarian crisis.
Since late June, more than 40 villages in Somalia’s Southwest state have been under floods.
A combination of the floods, new wave of locust invasion, the COVID-19 pandemic, increased cases of insecurity, and loss of jobs or livelihoods makes the situation dire for Somali children.
Save the Children has now called upon international partners and organizations to step in to provide humanitarian assistance to Somalia.
